Memorial Fire Ceremony
October 27 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm
You are very warmly invited to attend a Memorial Fire Ceremony, Sunday, October 27th between 2 and 4 PM in our Temple at 2872 Folsom Street, San Francisco.
This year has seen the Moksha of two of the most beloved teachers to grace our ashram – eminent Sanskrit scholar Dr. Ram K. Sharma, and beloved Swami Dr. Jayanti Patel, author, playwright, actor, creator of illusion, whose life was the mastery of living in the moment. A little known fact is that Dr. Patel was also a revolutionary and freedom fighter, who marched with Gandhi and took a bullet in the leg for his trouble.
We are also honoring Swami Ma Bhaskarananda, who was an embodiment of the Yogic path.
As a close disciple of Guruji, her life was a translation of his teachings. A modest being, she wore her sense of humility like a sari, never taking credit for any of her accomplishments, preferring to attribute her accomplishment to Dr. Mishra. Little known is the fact that MaBha gave up a life of considerable privilege to follow Guruji, a fact she never regretted. There were some very spare years at the Yoga Society, a time when there was MaBha and only two residents, and then only one. I know; I was that resident. That period of time was a master class in the Yogic Life.
We are looking around and taking pride in what we have accomplished and become in barely forty years and it is only fitting we memorialize these great teachers who have enshrined Guruji’s teachings within their lives. They have given texture and nuance to the Yogic life, as we hope others who pass through our doors may do in years to come.
We plan a Fire Ceremony in the early afternoon followed by tea and light refreshment where guests can gather, share experiences and reminisce about their encounters with the honorees.
Won’t you please join us?
Achyuta Maharaj, Vice-President
The Yoga Society of San Francisco
